How can I insert an Adobe Photoshop image into Publisher 2003?

I have an image created in Photoshop that is saved with a transparent
background. If I save it as a jpg or tiff, it automatically saves everything
on a white background. I am trying to overlay this image onto a gradient
color background and want that gradient to show thru behind my graphic. Is
this possible?

The JPG format does not support alpha transparency.

The TIFF format does support transparency, but the import filters in
Publisher don't support the TIFF variant that supports transparency.

If you only have one level of transparency (full transparency) and you have
a low-quality image, you can use a transparent GIF.

If you have a high colour depth or you want gradiented transparency, you
will need to use either EPS or transparent PNG.

EPS will only work when printing to a PostScript printer (or PDF file),
otherwise only the (non-transparent) preview image prints.

PNG may not print the transparency - the workaround is to export as a
high-res PNG from Publisher then print the PNG in an image viewer.
