How can I read .xls documents in Word 2000?

I would like to just be able to read .xls attachments that come from e-mail
friends that do team lists, rosters, phone lists, etc. on their computers at
work. I'm sure that Microsoft Office, and Excel are real handy programs to
have at work, but for those of us that have only home computers, (and only
the software to do home projects) it sort of makes little sense to purchase
entire office programs just to read an attachment about your daughter's
soccer team roster. I am hoping to obtain some sort of "plug-in" to be able
to read and print these attachments in Word 2000, I have no real need to
create them. Thank you for your time.

You should ask your correspondents to give you the data in a more
neutral format (text, html, etc.) It's not Microsoft's fault that you
have such inconsiderate friends. Your friends could also obtain (free
or purchase) a tool to make PDF files for you to use the free Adobe
Reader. Talk with them. Explain that it's presumptuous for them to
assume you have Excel.

You also could download the Excel viewer from Microsft's web site. (Free).

You can also consider using OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org that has
a terrific spreadsheet that can handle xls files (and a word processor
that can handle doc files). (Free)

You could also see if you have Works or other spreadsheet application
installed on your computer. Often software of this sort of provided
with the hardware vendors as part of the "package".

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
