how can I stop toolbars from popping up automatically?

In microsoft word I would like to stop unwanted toolbars from popping up
automatically. I have taken the time to customized my toolbars and only need
those present on the documents I create. It is annoying having to
periodically remove toolbars which the program may deem necessary or useful
depending on the task I am about to perform in the document.
