In the future, please post your Project Server questions in the
microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup, as this newsgroup is devoted to
the Microsoft Project desktop application only. To answer your question, do
the following:

1. Launch Microsoft Project Professional and log into Project Server.
2. Open the project for which you wish to check out a document.
3. Click Collaborate - Documents.
4. Click the Shared Documents link.
4. On the Shared Documents page for the selected project, hover your mouse
pointer over the name of a document until you see the pick list button
appear for that document.
5. Click the pick list button for the document and select "Check Out" from
the list.
6. Hover your mouse pointer over the document again, click the pick list
button, and then select the "Edit in Microsoft Word" (or whatever
application created the document.

Hope this helps.
