How do I combine two countif statements to obtain a number in a ra

This relates to Excel 2003.

Question seems simple enough, is there a way of using countif that will
result in counting numbers only with in a specific range?

I.e. Nos. 5, 6,7,8,9 &10 and you want to return a count of those numbers in
the range >=7 & <9 only. the naswer in this example would be 3.

=COUNTIF(A1:A100,">=7")-COUNTIF(A1:A100,">=9")

or try
=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A100>=7),--(A1:A100<9))
