How do I delete a segment in a line when drawing in Word?

I'm learning to use the draw feature in Word. I am unable to delete a segment
of line in a shape that I have already drawn (the shape will no longer be a
closed shape). I clicked on edit points and added 2 new points at either end
of the segment I want to remove but when I right click the option 'remove
segment' is not a highlighted option. What am I doing wrong?

Might help if you

1. Mention which version of Word

2. Describe how you drew the original shape.

FWIW, I used the "Freeform" tool to draw a closed shape. I then clicked the DRAW
button and selected EditPoints. I right-clicked on a segment and was able to
choose "Delete Segment". Once I'd done that, and tried doing the same on yet
another segment, the command was greyed out. So I'd guess that perhaps you don't
really have a closed shape?

Hello Cindy,

I am using Word 2003 (from microsoft office - student and teacher). I'm
pretty sure I drew my shape using freeform.

I've tried again like you describe and can take one segment out - but if I
try to take a second segment out the option is not highlighted. Am I limited
to only removing one segment or is the trick in making a better choice of
tool (curve, freeform or scribble) in the first place?

Thanks
Linda

You can only remove a segment from a closed shape, so yes, you're limited to
one segment (but only from a CLOSED shape). So, yes, you'd need to choose a
different tool if you want this level of capability. And by different tool I
mean a real graphics program, rather than the Office drawing tools.
