How do I encrypt documents in Word?

Using a strong password to open the document (Word 2000 +) will encrypt the
document. These passwords can be broken, but not easily. If you are really
concerned about encryption, buy third-party software.

You could password the file, which would result in an encryption that,
depending on the nature of the threat and the resources of whoever might
try to access the contents, is not very secure. The better way would be
to encrypt the file, after saving it in Word, with GnuPG or PGP or
another well-tested encryption program.

The amount of encryption provided by Word is variable and can be made very
strong. Certainly strong enough to keep password cracking software busy for
weeks. The default encryption is intended to provide compatibility with
earlier versions of Word and is weaker, but you don't have to accept the
default - tools > options > security > advanced.
