how do I fade one slide off while the next comes on

would like to move from one photo to next --first photo fades out
simultaneously as second appears

Use Custom Animation. Place the second photo on top of the first. Have the
first photo Exit as dissolve out, and the second photo Entrance dissolve in
with the Start: being With Previous.

If you are using PowerPoint 2002 or 2003, than simply use the Smooth Fade
transition type.
