How do I fix a subtotal within a subtotal?

I was recently upgraded to Excel Professional 2003 at work. Issue is
subtotals. Example: Category A,B,C etc - Subcategory 1,2,3 etc. / Subtotal
all As,Bs,Cs etc. That works fine. Subtotal all 1s,2s,3s within each A,B,C
etc - If each Category has at least two subcategories it works fine. If one
Category only has one subcategory it completely screws up. Hoping it's a
setup or template issue. Have downloaded all fixes. Have run the repair
feature. This worked fine in Excel 2000 and it works on someone else's
computer that has the same version I do.
