how do I get mac mail v 2.1 to default to entourage

seecreature

a friend gave me their computer. I've set up entourage and everything
is fine until I try and send an email to say someone at craigslist or
whatever. everything i've read says to click on mac preferences and
pick mail default under general. but there is no general under
preferences - all that comes up is account info, mailbox and advanced
and i can't find anything relevant under those. as you can probably
tell, i am not computer minded and trying to figure this out is really
pissing me off. can anyone please help?

Open Mail, then in the Preferences (under General) you can chose your
defaul e-mail client.

It *used* to be in the general system preferences, but it's not the case
anymore,

Set default in Entourage 2008 is now in Entourage preferences.

The preference to set the default email application is no longer in System
Preferences. Apple now requires you to make this setting in Safari or Mail
preferences. However, there are freeware applications you can use to set
preferences:

IC-Switch..... I like the feature where it puts a small icon in the menu bar
that allows you to toggle which application you want as default for email,
web, FTP etc. Quick and easy way to change default application for testing
purposes.

IC-Switch is a helper utility for Internet Config (hence the "IC" in its
name), for Mac OS X only. It allows you to change quickly and easily your
default emailer, FTP client, news and RSS readers and Web browser, simply by
choosing an item from a menu displayed in all applications.

RCDefaultApp... RCDefaultApp is a preference pane that allows a user to set
the default application used for various URL schemes, file extensions, file
types, and MIME types. MacOS X uses the extension and file type settings to
choose the application when opening a file in Finder, while Safari and other
applications use the URL and MIME type settings at other times for content
not related to a file (such as an unknown URL protocol, or a media stream).

More Internet...... More Internet is a System Preferences pane that uses
Internet Config to allow you to choose which applications are set as helpers
for internet protocols (i.e. which application will be chosen to handle
which URL.)

<http://www.monkeyfood.com/software/MoreInternet/>

MISFOX (MIssing Internet Settings for X)....... MisFox will show all the
file mappings settings and the protocol helpers. You can inspect these
settings, but you can also edit, delete and create new items for these
settings. Protocol Helpers are used to find the right application to handle
certain internet protocol.

I have a similar problem. I used to use Mail 3.5, but got Entourage and set it as my default. However, most mail is still going to Mail 3.5. Some is ending up in Entourage, but not most of it. Now what?

did you try the reply posted to the original question?

Start up mail 3.5 and in the preferences set the default email client to
Entourage.

You can also set the default email client using the prefs in Entourage
2008, but not in Entourage 2004.

You can also set the default email client using the prefs in Entourage
2008, but not in Entourage 2004.

Whatever your default mail reader is, if you open Mail and it includes an
account it will download mail from that account. If you have a POP account
and it's set to delete messages from the server after reading, those
messages won't appear in Entourage after Mail has downloaded them.

If you are trying to send photographs in iPhoto, you must go into iPhoto
Preferences, and on the General preferences set the mail sender to
Entourage.

In addition to the other answers, you can quit Apple Mail and it can't
download messages.

Try deleting these .plist files in your User's Library --> Preferences
folder:

com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
com.apple.internetconfig.plist

Try one at a time. You can save them else where while you test this.

Let me know if it's one or both.
