How do I get new made category as new maps?

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Email Client: pop

I made new categories with colours. But in the email-view list, are only the three categories that were allready there in the programme itself.
How can I get my new categories in that viewing list?
In this way it make no sense to create new categries if I can't use them.
