How do I keep customised toolbars from defaulting on exit?

Hi, I usually customise Word & Excel with buttons for macros on the toolbar
but have a new PC now. When either of these are closed completely the
toolbar resets to default. Does anyone know what I need to change so that it
saves my custom buttons, macros, etc?
