How do I make the slides advance automatically?

I have done everything the directions say-- In the "Set Up Show" box --use
timings if present is checked. I used the rehearse show to create the
timings and then accepted the timings at the end. The Slide sorter screen
shows each slide with a timing and yet when I run the show it continues to
the end of each audio file before continuing (rather than cutting off at the
rehersal timing). I made two slide shows yesterday and it worked fine but
now...NOTHING AGGGGGHHHHH! PLEASE help!!

Check out this entry from Steve Rindsberg's PPT FAQ. It will show you teh
way to fix the problem.
Play sounds across multiple slides (A WAV runs through it)

Thanks for the try but i guess I didn't explain the problem right...

I don't want one sound file to play over several slides. I want one
different sound file to play on each slide--ie american robin song partnered
with american robin slide. But I want the slide to advance to the next slide
and cut off the end of the wav file (I don't really need to have 2 min of a
robin singing--just 6-10 seconds). Right now even with the timings set to 6
seconds the powerpoint waits to advance until the whole sound file has
played. It worked correctly the first two power point presentations I made
but now it won't and I didn't change anything between then and now...
Thanks--any suggestions?

Click Insert > Movies and Sounds > Sound From File.
Add the sound you want it to play and select automatically.
After adding, right click on the sound and click custom animation.
As you can see, you already have a sound properties in the custom animation
that start the sound.

Now, to stop it, Click Add Effect > Sound Actions > Stop.
Modify the Start:"On Click" to "With Previous".
Right click on the stop properties and go to timing.
Set the delay to 6 seconds so that the song will stop after 6 seconds. You
can also modify it to your preference.

Thank-You--this did make the sound file stop after the predetermined time.
Unfortunatly the slide show still won't progress automatically. I still need
to click twice to make it move to the next slide. Is there some obscure area
that needs to be checked or unchecked for the automatice advance to work? I
have the "use timings if present" checked and I used "rehearse show" to set
the timings and then accepted "use timings when viewing the show". I tried
using the slide transition screen to make all the slides the same length
thinking that may be the problem but no luck. It is as if the powerpoint is
ignoring the command to run automatically...
Thanks
Elizabeth

Click Slide Show > Slide Transition.
Under Advance Slide section, uncheck "On mouse click" and check
"Automatically after".
Click Apply to all slides.
Now run the slideshow and see if the problem still persist.

One more note regarding this:
" I tried
using the slide transition screen to make all the slides the same length "
Do not set the timing, have it as 00:00. Also, you have to click twice
because the first click is to advance to the next slide.

Under the Custom Animation, is the first animation a On Click or After
Previous? If it is an On Click, the slide will automatically advance, but you
will need to press enter to allow the first animation to start animating.

You can also check this out as a reference if the slides start advancing too
