How do I optimize for search engines?

John

What are the best tips for optimizing a frontpage website so that it gets as
high a rating as possible in Google?

What is the average length of time it takes for a new website to start
showing up in Google after it has been submitted?

Thanks,

John

Don't over do the keywords. ( 25 max )
Make sure the keywords match the text on the page.
Make sure the page title is relevant to the info on the page, new_page1
new_page2 etc won't get it and you'd be surprised how many people create new
pages and never title them.

As for how long, anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks.

Hi Steve,

Do the keywords have to match the text on page 1 or can it match with text
on any page?

The keywords have to match the text on the page the keywords are on.
Similarly, <Title> and Description should also be relevant to the page they
are on.

Go over to alt.internet.search-engines, you will get alot of useful seo info
there.

Hi John,

My experience with google and yahoo is that you can start with looking
at the sites that come up high on the words you want to be searched
by. Look at their index pages, their keyword, titles, and search
results to decide what you think makes them succeed. Modify your site
to include the appropriate material. You will know your results in 48
hours (just look at the dates on the search results themselves). To
get relevant in all the engines must be very complicated, but I have
great success with this simple approach to google and yahoo. Good
luck.
