AOL uses an IMAP server for inbound mails. Showing a line through a
delete-marked item is how IMAP works. Deleting an item only marks it as
deleted and does not physically purge it from your IMAP mailbox. That way,
when traveling or otherwise accessing your IMAP mailbox from different
locations, the items you deleted in one e-mail client are still there for
you to read when using a different e-mail client from somewhere else.

You need to Purge the delete-marked items so they actually get purged from
your mailbox on the IMAP server. After deleting mails, and when you later
decide to get rid of them (so they aren't even accessible from another
location by logging in from there), then Purge them to physically remove
them from the IMAP server.

thanks, since i don't need the deleted items or access to them ever
again where is the button or menu selection that makes the item go
away forever?

Depends on your version of Outlook. In Outlook, hit the F1 key and search
on "purge" or "imap".
