How do I restore the column view in Entourage?

Today suddenly my entourage mail views (entourage 2004) turned from the
previous awesome column-arranged view, into some bizzare "arranged by" view
that uses multiple lines per email message (REAL efficient) and does not
show multiple columns, hence I can no longer sort by various items by
clicking on the column header. The "columns" submenu in "view" is now grayed
out. I can only access the "arrange by..." submenu despite the fact that I
do not want to 'arrange by' anything except the classic column view.

Does anyone know what I did to mess up my view and how to restore this to
normalcy? I have looked through all the menus and tried everything, I must
be missing something.

Actually I think you need to turn the preview pane on below the list, or
turn it off. When it is on the right, it shows messages in the 2 line
format.
