How do I stop the text automatically replacing itself as I type?

When I am word processing, the letters sometimes replace each other. If a
leave out a letter, I cannot replace it without retyping the rest of the
piece. I don't know what causes this and ow to rectify the problem. i would
be grateful if someone could gine me some advice about this.

When this happens, you are in Overtype mode instead of Insert mode.
Double-click the OVR button in the status bar (the bottom of the window) or
press the Insert key on the keyboard once (the OVR button in the status bar
is dimmed when you are in Insert mode).

Note:
By default, the Insert key is assigned as a keyboard shortcut for the
Overtype command. The problem may occur because you accidentally hit the
Insert key. If you want to prevent the Insert key from switching to Overtype
mode, you can remove the keyboard shortcut as follows:

1. First make sure that you are _not_ in Overtype mode.
2. Select Tools > Customize and click the Keyboard button.
3. Below Categories, select "All Commands".
4. Below Commands, select "Overtype" (if you type "ov" quickly, you will
scroll to Overtype).
5. In the "Current keys" field, select "Insert", then click the "Remove"
button.
6. Make sure that "Save changes in" is set to "Normal.dot".
7. Click "Close" twice.

8. To save Normal.dot at once, press and hold the Shift key while you select
File > Save All. If a dialog box opens, asking whether to save changes to
Normal.dot, click Yes.

This is usually due to accidentally pressing the INSERT key which switches
you to Overtype mode. You can override that in Tools, Options, Edit.
