How do i unlock the backspace button?

The backspace button on Word doesn't work, but it works on other
applications. I highlight something to delete it (then push backspace) but it
isn't deleted. It used to work, but now it doesn't, how can I make it work
again?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces
selection" box.
