How do I use "find/replace" to replace "a7ofhearts" with "a7of (and then a
pic of a heart)? I am using MS Office XP and Word 2002. Thanks.

Which font do you use?

With Arial or Times New Roman, you can use
"Edit > Replace",
Find what: ofhearts
Replace with: of♥

(Hope the heart will display here in this post, instead of a question mark...)

You can insert the heart into the doc from "Insert > Symbol, Font: Times New Roman, Subset: Miscellaneous Symbols".

Or type 2662, then use Alt+C. Or type Alt+9829.
♣ = U+2660 = Alt+9827
♤ = U+2661 = Alt+9828
♥ = U+2662 = Alt+9829
♦ = U+2663 = Alt+9830

Once you have it in the doc, you can copy/paste it into the "Replace" dialog (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V).

Or you can use Alt+9829 directly in the dialog, too.

Klaus

[♥...] type 2662, then use Alt+C.

Oops. Alt+X in the English version.

Ok Klaus you have to remember I'm a dunce here but everytime I go to copy and
paste into the "replace" space in "find/replace" the cursor jumps out of the
box. I've been trying to put in a nice little rose emoticon from Yahoo! by
cut and paste and then replacing a7ofhearts with a7of (rose symbol)s but that
doesn't work. The cursor keeps jumping out of the replace box. I found the
heart symbol where you told me it was but again I'm not able to hold the
cursor in the replace box. When you say "Alt+9829" do you mean I should hold
down the alt key, hit the plus key in the numeric keypad and type in 9829 all
at the same time? I'm not a pianist (alas) and I haven't taken a course in
html ( is that what this is?). Anyway can you simplify this for a dunce? And
I am using Times New Roman. Thank you, R

Are you using Ctrl+V to paste? This should work but is not really necessary
if you have the replace text on the clipboard: you can use ^c (Clipboard
contents) in the "Replace with " box.

To insert any character using the Alt+0xxx method, press Alt while typing
the numbers (sequentially) on the numeric keypad. The plus sign just means
that you do the two things at the same time--like Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar for a
nonbreaking space (for which you press all three keys simultaneously).

Hi again,

Hopefully Suzanne has already answered all your questions.
I'm not a pianist (alas) and I haven't taken a course in
html ( is that what this is?).

It's the "standard" way to show keyboard shortcuts.

As Suzanne said, "X+Y" means that you press X, keep it down, and press Y.
"X,Y" would mean "press X, release that key, press Y".

Good luck!
Klaus
