How do I use the autofilter to sort a list

You don't. Autofilter is used to filter a list. Data - Sort is used to
sort a list. HTH Otto

Depends on the version of excel you're using.

If you apply the data|filter|autofilter to the list, do you see "Sort ascending"
and "sort descending" at the top of the list when you use the arrow in the
header?
