How do set up email notification?

I use Windows XP Pro
Outlook 2002


I have configured the email settings in Tools/Options/email options/advanced
email options...and i make sure the box is checked next to "display envelope
icon in system try" and
"play a sound" but i never hear a sound or see the icon. My volume settings
are fine. Have I missed a step? What am I doing wrong?
