Go to tools-Schedules, and uncheck send receive all.

Also, start the Mail app and change the preference for the default mail
program to the one you want to use. For some reason, Apple put the mail app
preference in the Mail program instead of System Preferences. Ditto for the
preference for default browser. It is in Safari, not System Preferences.
