How keep old version from launching?

Just got office 2004. How do I keep old version of Entourage from
launching, while I am trying to figure out the disasters I'm having in Word
and Excel 2004? I don't think you are able to just uninstall old version of
Entourage alone. Thanks. Entourage X still seems to launch even though
I've taken it out of the toolbar.

How are you launching the application?

Move it to the Trash.

Move it to the Trash.
I think I solved it in that I had it in my startup items pointed to the old
version. But You can't just put a part of office in trash like other apps. I
think you have to uninstall all of office with an official uninstaller as I
understand it.
No?

Yes, to get rid of it permanently. I _think_ Dave meant just as a temporary
measure, since program files in the Trash won't launch. It's much better
having done what you did - track down the real problem (which could have
have been any number of things).

Since you've had both versions open, you ought to also remove any and all
copies of "Microsoft Database Daemon" which you see in Startup Items to
avoid confusing duplications of Reminders popping up. Log Out (Apple menu)
and Log In. Then launch Entourage 2004, which will also launch the correct
Daemon if/when you have any pending reminders.

Paul:
But once I finally do the uninstall of 2001, then I wont need to go into
startup items and delete anything, correct? I'm bit hesitant to go in there
and start deleting things.

You're hesitant about deleting things form _Startup Items_? That's
specifically there for you, the user, to configure. It's quite possible that
after removing office 2001 you will see a sort of blank generic icon still
for the "dead" Microsoft Database Daemon". You should absolutely, most
definitely, remove that. And it does absolutely no harm, to remove "live"
ones as well - in fact it's the right thing to do. The next time you launch
your current Entourage it will simply put its own Daemon into Startup items,
and now you'll know you have only the correct one there.

I suppose you could pay an "expert" $100 to do this for you, but since it
takes all of 5 seconds and is completely harmless and risk-free I can't
think that anyone would want to.

Ok Paul, here's what it was: someone at Microsoft told me once, I asked
them, what are all those things in my startup item I don't recognize, and
she said, well if you don't recognize it don't delete it, and definitely
don't deletes daemons. Still don't know really what daemons are.

Now as we speak I have 2 entourage daemons in startup folder, but only
entourage 2004 there. I would uninstall entourage 2004 but I can't because
(and tell me if I'm wrong) You can't just uninstall one app from office--
this is what Microsoft told me -- you have to uninstall all off of office
(which I think is crazy -- no?)

And I can't uninstall Office yet because I'm having problems still with
Excel 2004.

So should I wait till I finally uninstall 2001, before dealing with having 2
daemons in the startup folder?

(side note : wonder if 2 daemons have is causing the entourage in dock to
bob up and down on restarts)

The daemon is primarily used for displaying reminders for upcoming tasks and
events. Secondarily, it is the interface by which all applications
(including Entourage) talk to the database. If Entourage is not running,
you're not using another application to get at your Entourage data (like
Palm Sync or Word), and you don't have or care to see upcoming reminders,
there's no need for the daemon to be running. Also, apps that require the
daemon will launch it when they need it, so the only thing you'll lose by
deleting the daemon from the Startup Items is the reminders.

Sound like I don't need it. But I don't see an upside to deleting it.
