How to add a new column in MSP 2003 with a reference number...

....which relates to a number of different tasks but not all. Specifically I
am thinking of giving a sub-project a unique number, which will relate to a
series of tasks.

I'm quite new at this, and can't find any helpful info in my textbook in the
software help. I am baffled by the field types in the column definition
dialogue box.

Can anyone help?
