How to delete messages on the exchange server?

S

shore.mary

I've set up Entourage to get my work mail from an exchange server (I
don't know what iteration of exchange server we're using). Entourage
works perfectly when I'm going from Outlook (on a PC at work) or
Webmail to Entourage. All changes I make in Outlook are reflected in
Entourage. Going the other direction, however, I can move mail to
folders and have those changes appear in Outlook/Webmail, but I cannot
delete an email and have it deleted from the server. I'm guessing
there is a setting somewhere I need to change, but I can't find it.

Entourage sometimes takes a few minutes to sync. Are you giving it a chance
to make the changes on the server?

You can force a sync by control-clicking the folder name in the folder list
and choose Synchronize Now.

Does the message not move to the Deleted Items folder on the server? You
might try emptying your cache.

If you see this in just one or a handful of folders then right-click or
Control-click that folder, select Folder Properties and click the Empty
button to empty the cache. You can also select the account itself and
empty the cache for all of your folders.

Hope this helps!

I see this problem also - deleting messages in the inbox or moving messages to folders from the inbox doesn't works when I'm using Outlook at work, but when I use Entourage 2008 the will not be deleted from the inbox, even after forcing a sync or deleting the cache.

If I remember correctly, moving the message to a folder will actually copy the email to the folder on the server but not delete the email in the inbox.

This all means that when I get back to my computer at work and open Outlook, all those emails that I deleted/moved are still in the inbox.

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. One of the IT guys at work is on the
case, too. We've figured out that (a) moving something to a subfolder
in the inbox works fine (the server and Entourage look the same), (b)
permanently deleting something also works (when given time to sync or
right-clicking "synchronize now"). What doesn't work is moving
something to the deleted items folder in Entourage, leaving it there,
and getting that action to be reflected on the server.

Emptying the cache results in accurately reflecting w/in Entourage
what is on the server, but I want to go the other direction. I wanted
the server to accurately reflect what I'd done in Entourage.

I set up a schedule for permanent delete in Entourage, and this takes
care of the problem--I just have to get used to not using my "deleted
items" bin as a "maybe-I-want-to-delete-this-item" bin. (I had 400
items in there when I did a permanent delete the first time.)

OMG, Bill, you live in Mpls. I do too, just a Frisbee-throw from the
35-W bridge and the Dunn Bros on Univ. Nice to "meet" you. Thanks for
all the Entourage resources. -Mary Hinkle Shore

LOL! Yeppers. But I'm closer to south Minneapolis and no where near
downtown.

This reminds me of my first MVP Summit at Microsoft. They host all MVPs
for one week in Redmond about every 12-18 months and we get to meet
other MVPs from everywhere on the globe (U.S., Canada, Australia, all
parts of Europe, South America, India, Africa, Asia...). At our last
dinner together I ended up sitting next to an Office MVP from Golden
Valley. It's a small world.

Thanks for the kudos. :)

And you're moving all your messages *within* the Exchange account,
correct? You're not moving anything to the folders under "On My Computer"?
