How to edit text on a GIF file

I'm running Windows XP Home (SP2) and Office 2002. I need to know how to
edit some text that is in a GIF file. As I'm on Office 2002, I don't have
access to M'soft Picture Manager or M'Soft Paint (I was told either of these
would enable editing). Is there any cheap and cheerful solution? The editing
I want to do is basic copy editing - rearranging words and lines in standard
text that are actually logos of some business names I've created. They were
saved by a graphic artist for me in GIF format form my concepts.

Microsoft Paint is an Accessory that comes with Windows. Look on your
Programs menu.

You are not going to be able to edit text in a gif file - it's an image now.
It's just a bunch of pixels.

A reply from Val said it's impossible to edit text in a Gif file as the text
is a jumble of pixels

Thanks Val - other replies are saying I can edit by using Paint which I've
tried without success. Another posting recommends a download from
IrfanView.com

It's not to say you cannot edit the gif image, but you will be manipulating
an image. The text that appears on it is just part of the picture, not text
that can be edited in the sense of Notepad or Word.

Your artist, on the other hand, probably created the image with software
that has text handling in it, and hopefully saved it in an editable format.
So you should be able to tell him/her what you want changed in the text, and
it will be an easy fix.

IrfanView is a handy tool for some basic image manipulations, such as
contrast, brightness, cropping or resizing, but will not help with the text
problem. It is a program you ought to consider getting, it's a free
download at www.irfanview.com.

1. MS Paint will allow you to put text into an image.
2. MS Paint will allow the editing of pixels in the image.
3. None of this is an Office issue.

Wow...somebody who does not have paint. Another 'cheap and cheerful'
soulution that is a bit more professional and does a nice job of
handling text is The Gimp. http://www.Gimp.org
