How to Import Entourage Mail from a Different Mac

L

Lynn Quinlan

Hi there,

I want to combine all the data on each of two Leopard-based Macs into
Entourage 2008 on one computer. What is the best way to accomplish this? I
wondered if copying the actual database from Computer A to Computer B would
be an option, however, that would mean I have two databases and this might
cause problems.

Anyway, any advice on how to proceed would be very much appreciated. There
would be a good amount of duplication here, but I can remove the duplicate
messages after the two files are reduced.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Lynn,

if you don't mind the duplicates, then I'd recommend the following
procedure: on computer A, launch Entourage and click on File>Export. Export
all your data into an Entourage archive, and transfer the resulting file to
computer B. Open Entourage on computer B, then click on File>Import and
choose "Entourage information from an archive or earlier version". Follow
the instructions, and you will end up with all the information from computer
A on computer B. The only thing left to do is the removal of duplicate
entries.

There is no simple or straightforward way to properly merge two databases,
unfortunately.

Simple way is to copy the entire Microsoft User Data folder to the other
computer. Launch Entourage and you are back in action.

If you have any data in a new Identity, let me know and we can merge the
two. Just save your Identity folder before moving over the old MUD folder.

Diane, thanks for your reply..That is exactly what we tried first as IT had cloned my entire Documents folder which included Microsoft User Data folder etc. - entourage totally lost all data and we had to set up the account all over again. Now I have all the emails from my IMAP account but need to migrate over mails stored on personal folders o the other Mac. I dragged and dropped the folders it created foldername.mbox files on desktop, I copied them over firewire to the new Macbook Pro and when I import it creates a single message which appears to contain all the messages in that folder but garbled.

Please help!!

Thanks,
Prasad

What happens if you drag a MBOX file into the message window?

I'm suspicious of how your files were made. There is no reason that the
Documents folder clone should not have worked. If you could explain more
about that, we might be able to figure out what went wrong. BTW, did you
check permissions on the folders?

Did you let Entourage create a new blank Identity then drag over individual
files like your Identity?

After the 'import' this is what I see:
a single message in the folder oldfoldername.mbox
with contents such as :

Comparing sizes and permissions...are they the same?

Did you replace the Documents folder or did you drag files into a the
current Documents folder?

Are your other cloned files working OK?

Have never seen this reported before. Do you still have access to your
original data?

Ran across a similar problem. Here is what the user reported:

Here's what worked. The Preferences are key. I had the
Preferences set for sharing on the iMac so that (obviously) I had Read and
Write authority but others on the network were Read Only. When I moved the
Microsoft User Data file from the iMac to the laptop, I did not realize that
the file did not change these permissions just because I moved it to another
computer I owned and so did not think to make a change. The Error -5000 was
caused by the fact that Entourage on the laptop could not write to the
database, I guess. This was fixed by selecting Command-i (Get Info) for the
Microsoft User Data file, on the laptop changing the permission to Read and
Write on the laptop, clicking the button below that that makes that change
in
all files inside the Microsoft User Data file, then closing the Get Info
window. As soon as I did that, Entourage opened normally and all the data I
had moved was right there.
