How to refer to work-amount in project-task from excel

Hannes Heckner

Hi,

I just tried to cut and paste (insert as ..., create link) in excel a cell from
a project sheet. After insertion excel showed a broken reference.
The reference in the excel-cell read like:
=MSProject.Project.9|'\\aki\d$\Projects\company\company.mpp'!'!LINK_3'

So how is the correct syntax for referencing project data from within excel?

Best regards
Hannes

Hannes,
It sounds like you are trying to use a Paste Link from Project to Excel.
Although this method will work if done correctly and carefully, it is
subject to corruption.

I don't know what operation you are referring to when you say "insert as
...., create link) but the proper way to set up a Paste Link is the
following:
1. In Project select the task field you want to link
2. Hit cntl+C to copy
3. Switch to Excel and select the Worksheet cell to receive the link
4. Go to Edit/Paste Special
5. Select the Paste Link radio button
6. Select "text" in the "As:" selection box
7. Hit "ok"

You can see all the links by going to Edit/Links in Excel.

Now to avoid problems, do not move either the Project file or Excel file
to another location (i.e. change the path). Generally that will
"confuse" the link. If the link is deleted, be sure to save (Save As)
both the Excel and Project files since each contains part of the link
structure. If one is not saved, a link fragment will still exist and may
result in corruption.

Hope this helps.
John
