How to remove attachments from individual e-mails

I am using Entourage 2004 and want to remove attachments from
individual e-mails. In the preview pane, the 'Remove' button is there
but it's greyed out.

I know how to remove ALL my attachments [Message > Remove All
Attachments] but I don't want to do this.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

you don't mention which kind of email account you are using, POP, IMAP or
Exchange, as I don't think you can remove attachments from IMAP messages. If
it's a regular POP account however, such as your Gmail account, you should
be able to click on individual attachments in either the preview pane or the
message window, which will cause the Remove button to become active.

In the past, you could be deceived into thinking you were removing
attachments from IMAP messages. What actually happened was that they were
removed from the downloaded copy in the cache on your computer, but in fact
stayed up on the server. (There's no way to remove them from the originals
on the server where the messages stay encoded.) So it's much better now that
the Remove button is dimmed - you do not get false assurances.

The way to do it is to drag (or option-drag) the IMAP message to a local
folder (like the Inbox) "On My Computer". Delete the original IMAP message.
On the local copy "On My Computer" remove the attachment. Then you can
(optionally) drag the local copy, sans attachment, back up to the IMAP INBOX
(or other IMAP folder) and delete the local copy. A lot of trouble, but it
works.

Imap. The e-mail account I was referring to is not my gmail account,
but my work e-mail.

Will MS update Entourage or create an OS X version of Outlook? My
understanding is that Outlook on the PC does allow removal of
attachments. Also, it allows use of the client on the internet to
connect to the server via http.

BTW, I did say what version of Entourage I was using - read my post
again.

Sure.

No.

Just forget Outlook if you're on the Mac. Not sure what "the client on the
internet" is, but there's certainly no Entourage on the internet. If your
ISP maintains a web interface for email, you could always do webmail there
instead of using Entourage.

I just noticed this crazy Entourage behavior for the first time myself
today. We're on Exchange with 50MB mail quotas here at UConn so quotas are
constantly going over. The fact that MS' own Exchange client cannot handle
removing attachments in a standard fashion on their own server solution is
pretty pathetic.

Michel... My suggestion: USE APPLE MAIL. No problems removing attachments
when connected to IMAP or Exchange based system. Plus it's a lot faster at
refreshing remote content and staying in sync with the server.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm not the original poster. I don't need to
remove attachments from messages on IMAP accounts, and I've never even been
near an Exchange account, so it doesn't really concern me.
