how to remove gridlines from part of a worksheet only

probably simple but I'm a novice. building a worksheet to list people, pay
rates and hours worked etc. the header needs to have fill in areas that
change with the job so I entered them in the rows rather than in a proper
header. what I want to do is get rid of gridlines in the first 6 rows but
leave them intact on the rest of the document. I see templates that this was
done somehow. what am I doing wrong?

Select the cells and then pull-down:

Format > Cells... > Patterns > Color and check white

Hi,

I don't want to hijack this thread, but is the reverse possible? I want
gridlines in the section I'm working with, but would like them removed
from the rest of the sheet!

Not a hijack at all. Select all cells (upper left corner and format
background to white.
Then go back and re-format the "gridded" cells back to no-color background.

The edges may be a problem - you may need to outline them.

Rather than coloring the cells white to look like normal background and
wiping out gridlines. I think what you really want to do is put your cells
back to automatic pattern color, eliminate gridlines, and use borders
around the cells you want to have borders. Then you will see the same
thing in display and in print.

You're welcome again, but I see I made a mistake in my reference for
if you can't view a flash file (certain flash files, probably Flash 8 ) in Firefox,
it should have been firefox directory not excel directory:

and if you can't view the mentioned flash file in Internet Explorer, I don't
have an answer for that, as I can't view it in IE, it is obviously a security issue
between Macromedia, Microsoft, and/or options in IE. (I use Windows 2000).

I expect if many other people had a problem viewing those flash videos they
would have said something.

I am using excel 2003 with XP pro, maybe that is why all the fixes I try look
great on the screen but prints with gridlines throughout or none at all. It
seems to default to that regardless of what I have on the screen. My head is
getting sore from banging it on the wall so I'm quiting for today! Thanks

Thank you very very much for your two suggested links. They solved my
problem(s) as I had checked "borders with a bottom line" and "draft quality".
All is well now and your advice is much appreciated as it was frustrating me
