How to Retrive message deleated while "writing it?"

I was in the process of finishing a new message when I accidently hit
'delete'. It was not in the delete folder. Is it still on my computer?
I am using a G4 OS X 1.2.8 and mac. office. The delete folder is not
'showing' the number of messages it contains. It is an important
letter, is it possible to recover this?

If you never saved it first, then I'm afraid it's gone into thin air. You
have to save a message first for it to be sent to Deleted Items when
deleted. Otherwise it's not actually a message, it's just a (message)
window, and it just disappears.

Thank you for your response. It is not in some cache folder some place
on the hard drive?

I looked, by AppleScript, in the secret folder Entourage stores every _open_
message - the ones that are salvaged if the the app crashes. But it's gone
from there. And since Entourage X there is no longer a separate "Messages"
file that stores messages as text (I doubt deleted message windows would
appear there anyway). So no. If you want to spend $300 to some expert
salvage company and send them your computer, go ahead. But I doubt they'll
find it either. Since it wasn't saved, it's already been overwritten on
disk. Sorry.

The really bad news is that it¹s gone. I know that feels terrible, and I¹m
very sorry about it. Most of us have been there more than once.

Long ago I started using a keystroke capture utililty for just such moments.
They capture everything, so the text is messy, but it does preserve all the
thinking, phrasing, and keyed information. The one I used for OS9 was better
(can¹t remember name), but TypeRecorder is not bad. I strongly recommend you
grab a copy (shareware on versiontracker).

Next time you¹ll be okay when Word goes down in between saves (although Word
has become wizardly at protecting buffered text) or if you select a lot of
text to copy or cut it and accidentally hit the return key and delete it and
hit another key before you notice you did that so you can¹t undo.

Hope closing the barn door will help you forget that horse.

Sorry again.

Best,

- Bill

It's gone. When writing an important message, it's a good idea to type Cmd-S
(Save) as soon as you've typed a few lines, and then to save every five
minutes or so. But, once saved, accidental deleting will write the message
to the Deleted Items folder, so all will not be lost.

Another such keystroke capture utility is the new (beta) version of CopyPaste.
