How to set no default e-mail account.

Dear members:

After making a horrible mistake that will probably cost me dearly I
have come to realize that Entourage should be set-up so that there is
NO default e-mail. This way one can't send an e-mail from the wrong
account by mistake.

How can I set up Entourage so that there isn't a default e-mail
account ?

When I forget to fill in the subject line and make an attempt to send
the e-mail the program opens a dialog box asking me for the subject. I
would like to have the same thing done for the sending account this
way the program always asks me to choose the account prior to sending
the message when I forget to choose it instead of using a default
account.

This is REALLY important for me and I suspect for a good number of
other users as well.

How can this be set-up ?

Thank you in advance,

Joseph Chamberlain

Hi Joseph!

You have no option to not have a default account but you do have other
options.

To prevent your default account from being use to reply to all messages,
look under Entourage menu --> Preferences... --> Mail & News
Preferences... --> Reply & Forward. Uncheck the option to "Reply using
the default account". Replies you create will then use the account that
received the message as the replying account.

If you have POP accounts then you can edit each account, select Options
and select "Allow online access (shows account in the folder list)".
Your POP account will appear in your folders list on the left. If you
have that account selected in the folders list then new messages will be
created from that account.

Finally, if you're adamant about having to choose an E-mail address each
time then you can create a fake account:

Name: Fake account
Email address: [email protected]
Account ID: fake
POP server: pop.fake.com
SMTP server: smtp.fake.com

Be sure to UNcheck the 'Include this account in my "Send & Receive All"
schedule'.

Hope this helps!

to complete previous post...

And then you would *check* the option to "Reply using
the default account". You'll have to manually change the account on each outgoing email; if you don't you'll get an error and a second chance to choose the correct account.

Hi, Bill.

I've set up the fake account just as you suggested and it works perfectly.
At least I know that from now on I will rest assured that e-mails will not
be sent from the wrong account.

This suggestion works great but it forces you to go through several more
steps which involve receiving the notification that the e-mail could not be
sent, go to the sent folder and select the e-mail, click the resend button
and then choose the right account. It would be easier if Entourage allowed
the user to have no account set-up as default. How can I suggest this
modification to the development team so that Microsoft may incorporate this
feature in future versions of Entourage ?

Thank you very much for you help and extremely useful suggestion.

Best regards,

Joseph

You shouldn't need to re-send - just open the message and change the
account.

You can suggest this to Microsoft via the Help menu in Entourage, but
honestly I don't see them changing this behavior. A lot about Entourage -
especially in 2008 - relies on having a default account established. Every
other email program has the concept of a default account. Honestly I think
your request is uncommon.

Hi Joseph!

Glad this helped you somewhat. But I'm puzzled by your new problem.

Are you not able to change the sending account from a drop-down menu at
the top of the message *before* you send? I was envisioning my
suggestion as just a fail-safe mechanism to prevent you from sending a
message without consciously selecting the sending account first.
