How to set up botton tool bar

I run outlook 2003 on my computer and when I compose a message it starts
MS Word. If I start word directly it will have a status bar at the
bottom of the screen that among other things shows if I am in insert
mode or overstrike mode. When Word is start by Outlook this bottom
status bar is missing and I have not figured out an easy way to verify
if I am in insert mode or overstrike mode. Any help on setting this up
is appreciated.
