How to Train ENT to open .wmv files

How can I train my Mac OSX 10.4 or Entourage 11.2.3 to open .wmv
attachments with Windows Media Player.app rather than the wimpy MPlayer
OSX?

I get .wmv files as Entourage attachments and cannot double-click to
open them because either Entourage or my OSX thinks .wmv files belong to
the MPlayer OSX and it only does sound.... no video. I would like to
teach my system to open all .mwv files with something other than the
lame MPlayer. I tried Apple's Quick Time Player but it will not play
..wmv file created on or for PC's

Try downloading the flip4mac player, which is available free. If I
understand them correctly, Microsoft is backing out of its Mac media
player and is now encouraging the use of flip4mac.
http://www.flip4mac.com/ It is a Quicktime plugin that allows Quicktime
to play wmv files and it can be set as the default player. While I have
hit a couple of files it would not play, I'd say the success rate is
about 99%

I checked the web page and it is NOT a freebie like MWP.

All I want to do is train my OSX or Entourage to open .wmv files with
the Microsoft Windows Media Player. Today it opens them with the lame
MPlayer and may trash that application.

MPlayer has a nasty habit of changing itself to being the default for
Windows Media files. You can tell if the Icon has changed to an MPlayer
Icon. Locate a .wmv file and type ⌘-I. In the Get Info pane go to
'Open with'. In the drop down pane navigate to Windows Media Player.
Click on 'Change All'. Your done.

If any files have the MPlayer Icon you may have to do this again for
them.

Hope this helps.

By the way, if you want flip4Mac you can get the free player here:

Look around a bit harder - there's a "Get WMV Player FREE" button on the
<http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm>. It points to a page at MS.

You will need to make sure you update the plugin (once you get it installed)
to 2.0.2, as previous versions crashed Safari/Quicktime Player.

I don't have Mplayer installed, and double-clicking on a received WMV file
opens it in Quicktime Player.

Cheers,

Chris

Thank you, thank you. I finally found the small "Get WMV Player FREE"
button and it works perfect. The installer did its thing and I rebooted
the G4. Then clicked on the .wmv attachment in Entourage and it opened
up on QT. Could not be any better.

Thank you!!!!!

Just told me not compatible with intel mac.

What told you it was not compatible with intel mac? What happens when
you try to open a .wmv file that is attached to an Entourage mail
message? Did Entourage tell you it was not compatible or was it
QuickTime?

Maybe that was the flip4mac codecs that make .wmv files play inside
quicktime. They are offering an Intel version soon according to their
website.
