How to view a winmail.dat file?

I have received several messages from PC Outlook users that come with a
winmail.dat file attached. Entourage seems to be brain dead on the .dat
file and PC outlook users claim it is a standard picture format.

How do you view a .dat file with Entourage 2004?

A .dat file is actually not a picture format. Have a look at the following
excerpt from the Entourage MVPS site

I guess I will top post on this thread since that was the precedent...

Outlook 2003 now has a preference to convert rich text to html when sending
to "internet" recipients, i.e. those outside the exchange server.

Using rich text _can_ be preferable to html since it will not display
formatting tags as html will (for those wishing to receive plain text).
Having said that, plain text is probably the best of all, although html mail
is becoming much more accepted in recent years.

Most of these winmail.dat problems are caused by the sender using a feature
of Outlook that lets Word be the embedded email editor, which results in
rich text emails.
