how to write a personal statement when applying for a job

How on earth should we know?

I'm curious what this personal statement is supposed to be. Do they ask for
essays with a job app these days? "Why I deserve this job" in 1000 words or
less.

I think it's common these days to include some sort of personal "summary" of
character etc that is not strictly related to job skills or prior
employment - something on the lines of "I am bright and bubbly, a team
player, lick the boss's boots, make the coffee and am punctual and polite"
sort of thing...

Wow - My nose would have grown several inches with that tale! I'm not a
morning person so no bubbles, don't lick boots, can't make coffee, and I
have been known to snarl at people. However I am bright and punctual.
