I have SBE Office 2003, but would be willing to try anything that solves this
problem:
Example: 100 extensive, far-ranging unstructured interviews conducted
face-to-face that touch on many aspects of an issue, wherever the detective
work leads. 2-3 pages of handwritten verbatim comments captured per
interview. Now, I type a document for each interview in Word, code
subjects/themes, make a master code list, create a master doc with all the
codes as headings, then copy coded passages from the interview docs into the
master doc under the appropriate headings. I end up with a 100-page master
with all the verbatims sorted and presented by subject heading.
There MUST be a better way! I tried Excel (Interview # down the left,
subject code across the top, verbatim comments in each cell) but the
verbatims were longer than a cell could hold. If cell length were unlimited,
the problem would be solved. I'd even be able to print out good reports.
Alas, no deal. FYI, SPSS apparently has no software that solves the problem.
I asked.
Any suggestions? Is there a creative way to code and sort in Word? Is
there a way to put abbreviated comments in Excel cells that link to coded
comments in Word so that an Excel report prints the full verbatims? Is there
any available program you know of that handles this kind of research?
