Huge delay in opening font dropdown window

When I'm creating a new message in Entourage (latest version on OS 10.3),
and want to change the font in the message, there is always a huge delay in
getting the font window to pop up. It literally takes (I just counted again)
70-75 seconds before the rainbow spinning ball of death goes away, and then
finally the font dropdown window appears. What is going wrong and are there
ways to fix this problem? Thanks.

It could be a font problem. How many fonts do you have?

I have 76 fonts - is that too many?

It shouldn't be. I have more fonts than that between my Classic and OS X
font folders, and I don't experience a delay as severe as you do. Here's
something you can try: go to Entourage -> General Preferences, click the
"General" tab, and uncheck the "WYSIWYG font menu" option. Click OK and see
if that reduces the delay.
