Hyperlink

This is probably so simple I'll be embarrassed when I get the answer.
Powerpoint 2003 on WinXP SP-1.
I create a hyperlink in a slide to a file on a server.
Works great till I save the file.
Then it gives me an error about invalid location.
When I look at the Hyperlink, it's totally changed.
Hyperlink BEFORE saving PPT file
\\ghnt1\tape\Maintenance\PDF Documents\GA8 packline drives.pdf
Hyperlink AFTER Saving
.../../../../tape/Maintenance/PDF%20Documents/GA8%20packline%20drives.pdf
This is a networked drive on a server if that has any bearing.
I used to do this without any problems when I used PPT 97 and have only
just started using this new fangled stuff on XP.

Tom,

The %20 substitutions are to replace the spaces - That's normal

I can't work out the \\ghnt1\tape\
being substituted with ../../../../tape/

Have you missed out the words...or is that what the hyperlink has changed to ?

Thanks TAj for the response. I sure appreciate any help you can offer.
Already I have learned from you about the %20 being a space filler.
I copied and pasted the lines straight out of the powerpoint
presentation dialog for Action Settings. The first is from the
presentation prior to saving it. The link works everytime until I save
the thing. This happens to every hyperlink I have reguardless of the
file location. I have not tried to save it to my local drive because I
need this to work from the server. The change happens as soon as I save
the file. I've tried saving and closing and saving and returning to work
and it happens anyway. As I have indicated, I never had the problem when
I used to use PowerPoint 97 for similar projects.
The \\ghnt1\tape\ is the network path on the server here at work.
OBTW - Love your PPT backgrounds. They have inspired me to try a few
things on my own.

Thanks for the reply. You have great Website and I always read your
replies here even when they don't seem to pertain to me because they
might in the future. In short, I fear that if you can't help me... I
have a tough road to follow.
I'm told by my IT guy that Office on my PC is up (WinXP not SP-2 because
of conflicts with AV we use) to date with latest but, when I go to Help
in PPT I do not see that it has any indication of SP. Will it?
Drive is mapped on my desktop as I: drive but shows up after following
all the path to the file as the server location. In other words, I have
even used Explorer to go to the location of the file, copied the address
and pasted it into the blank when editing the Hyperlink and it changes
the address as soon as I hit OK. Then when I Save the presentation, it
morphs into the other thing.
I have used Action Settings and I have used the Hyperlink options from
Right clicking the piece of text where I want the Hyperlink. I'm not a
very good VBA programmer so I haven't gone that route.

THAT DID IT!!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you...
I set up the Hyperlink, did a Save As to my C: drive. Ran the PPT from
C: and it worked. Then I did a Save As to the server and ran it from
there and it worked. again and again and again...
My next child will be named after you. (Don't hold your breath though,
I've been fixed)
