hyperlinks open with unintended program

Recently, and for some unexplained reason, when I click
on an embeeded link in an email, my pc begins to install
a copy of lavasoft's add aware-and i am unable to visit
the site I clicked on.

Can someone please tell me how to stop this from
happening?

Actually, there is irony in your situation. If you allow the download
to finish and install ad-aware, it has the capability of telling you
if something has hijacked your web browser.
