Hyperlinks

Before, when I typed a hyperlink in a Word document, it would show
like in this example:

www.google.com

I must have inadvertently changed something because now that same
hyperlink shows as:

{ HYPERLINK "http://www.google.com" }

I can't find where to change the setting to go back to the simple
URL, that is, without the word HYPERLINK, the quotes, and the
brackets.

If someone can point me to where the setting is, I would greatly
appreciate it.

Press Alt+F9 to toggle between field codes and field results (probably how
you got the codes in the first place). This is equivalent to going to Tools
Options > View and checking/unchecking the Field Codes option.
