I can't read an Outlook Message with Entourage

I have a few email messages saved on my hard disk that were created
with Outlook 2003. I've copied these files into my iMac, and now
want to read them. But when Entourage opens them, no email text is
shown and it starts up a window to send / append text.

Ideas?

Reading these old messages was the primary reason I bought Office for
the Mac.

You didn't mention *how* you saved the messages. What format are the files?

It's a .msg file. I just dragged the message from my Outlook Inbox
into the folder I wanted to save the message in.

Normally, in Windows I can do this, and open the .msg just by double
clicking it. I figured I'd be able to do this.

Why not PST files? From what I gather, .msg files are Outlook
proprietary format files.

If you use Outlook to export to PST instead, you can import those
messages into Entourage. Do you still have access to your PC by chance?

Microsoft has an Entourage PST tool available here:

OK, that PST tool could work, but I've got an entire hard drive full
of mixed doc, xl, ppt, and msg files. It would be cumbersome, to say
the least, to take those messages back into Outlook, to create a PST,
that could be imported into Entourage.

Hi!
It would be cumbersome, to say the least, to take those messages back
into Outlook, to create a PST, that could be imported into Entourage.

I don't think it will be as hard as it might first seem. I'd start by
running a file search for all .MSG files on the PC. Then I'd select
(highlight) all of them and drag them into a waiting Outlook mail folder on
the PC. After that, take the resulting PST over to your Mac and import it.

The longest portions of this process will be waiting for the MSG files to be
found, pulling them into Outlook and then waiting for the PST tool to
convert the messages for use with Entourage.

William,

You're saying that Entourage can't read Outlook messages without
having them converted thru this PST converter?

That's correct. So you need to convert those MSG files to PST in
Outlook, and then use the PST Importer tool to import them into
Entourage.

(BTW, you do not need a conversion tool to open Windows .doc and .ppt
files in the Mac versions of Word and PowerPoint.)

That's correct. So you need to convert those MSG files to PST in
Outlook, and then use the PST Importer tool to import them into
Entourage.

Note that the PST Importer only works with PST files from Outlook 2001 for
Mac. It can't import PST files from Outlook for Windows. If you want to
move e-mail from Outlook to Entourage, you need to investigate some other
options.

This page has a pretty clear tutorial for moving mail from Outlook to
Entourage.

Outlook2Mac advertises that it can automate the same procedure. However,
some users have noted that contacts, calendar events, and tasks don't always
transfer properly.

I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the heads-up.
