I can't read Newsgroups

I am using Office 2003 Student Edition. Windows XP. I am trying to add
newsgroups. I think it was working at one point because I followed the
tutorial and have a "News" button now added to the took bar.. but now when I
click the "News" button it opens a directory, doesn't run a newsgroup reader.
So I started over again..
Following the example, I don't have "News" in the options anymore to add to
the "Go" button.
Any advice?

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the No button.

You may need to reset the menu or toolbar using Tools, customize.

Similar Problem in O2k3:
Tried to add a shortcut to the NEWS from the VIEW menu using customize...now
I can't find News at ALL. I have to manually start it from OE. any way to
repair that other than detect and repair?

After I wrote this, I actually went in to Internet Explorer, and set my
default newsreader (which had been turned off for some reason) to Outlook
Express, and that solved the problem!

I installed the "NEWS" feature previously, subscribed to all the groups I
wanted and ended my "NEWS" session after I reviewed all the messages I was
interested in. The next day, the "NEWS" link was missing from the "GO"
menu.

Now, when I follow the procedures below, the only option I have for my
Newsreader is Outlook Express. Does it matter I do not use Outlook Express
and only use Outlook 2003?? Does this mean I need to keep Outlook Express on
my PC in order to read newsgroups?

The News item in Outlook calls Outlook Express with the /outnews command
line switch in order to access newsgroups. Moreover, Outlook uses some of
Outlook Express' DLLs so uninstalling Outlook Express would disable Outlook.
