Why aren't they... what?

They are two different programs, made by two different companies. At
one time, they were very competitive, ie, Wordperfect was the
established "leader" and Word was the "contender". That is now
definitely changed, with Word almost universal, and Wordperfect
seeming to "hang on" with a limited amount of users. It just stands to
reason that they would NOT go to any great lengths to make it easy for
people to transfer between the programs....but... if you intall each
program with the necessary options (as opposed to the default
installations) they can be quite compatible.
