I have to send email twice, Mac Office 2004

After I have composed an email to send, I click on "send" button and get an
error message asking me to check my Account or my Network settings.

My settings, as nearly as I can tell, are OK. I then click a second time and it
is sent just fine. This happensd over 60% of the time. It's just getting to be
a hassle to deal with the same error message and click twice to send an
email.

Just a stab; but if it is happening just after you start up, you may be
running into a problem with your server. Some ISPs tend to reject send
access until there has been a pass on the pop server. You may find that if
you routinely run a "send and receive" before composing, the problem could
disappear.

If that's not it, I am over my head.

I've also seen that with some Exchange servers. In our case, most of the
problems went away when they updated the server applying some long
released patches.
