I purchased a laptop in June 2004 with Office 2003 already installed. I cant
find the cert of authenticity. Every time I try to start a program it asks
for the product key. Can I obtain one without buying a new package??

If you have a trial version of Office 2003 that has expired, then
no, you cannot obtain a product key without buying a new package.

How can I tell if it was just a trial version? I have the shortcuts to Word,
Excel, Powerpoint, etc?

If you didn't pay about $350 extra for Office, then it was a trial. Most
"over the counter" computers do NOT have full blown Office, just the trial
version.
