I need help with an Excel error that occurs when creating a chart

I'm trying to use a chart which links to data in different internal
worksheets. When I create the chart and save, I can't reopen the file. I
get the following generic error: "Excel.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by windows. You will need to restart program."

I've searched the Knowledge Base and none of the suggested causes fits the
situation.

Any ideas?
