Icons for mail/contacts, etc

New to Mac. Used to be links under the icons on the left side. Could click on the words and it would take you to mail/calendar/notes etc, etc. All of a sudden, they are gone. How do I get them back? They were between the task bar and "On My Computer"........

I believe you're referring to View --> Show Favorites Bar.
