1. I don't think I want separate identities. My partner
and I want to share the same account (view the same
e-mails), but we'd like to be able to switch names, so that
when each of sends mail, our name is in the "from". Is
there any way to do this other than the cumbersome task of
opening the account and retyping the name each time?
2. The "from" name used to appear when we were typing the
message, but it no longer does. We can't tell which of us
is currently names unless we open the whole account. How
do we do that?

You can create two account in the Tools:Account pane. The second account
will be used only for sending with the second "identity". Simply don't
enter anything for the POP server and ignorre the warning telling you
you need it.

You'll be able to simply select what account you are sending from then.
