identity-version conflict

I recently installed a new harddisk in my Powerbook, and reinstalled
the same version of Entourage that I'd used on the old harddisk. I'd
saved the Main Identity from the previous harddisk, renamed it, put it
into the new Office X Identities folder, but when I tried to select it
with Switch Identities, I got the message that the old identity doesn't
work with this version of Entourage. Weird. Now what do I do?
Somebody help!

Have you applied all the updates from <http://www.microsoft.com/mac>?

That is the most common cause of this problem.

Okay, I need to amend that a little. I realize now that the
newly-installed app is Entourage 2004, and I think the one on the old
harddisk was Entourage 2001. Thing is, I've tried the option to import
from Entourage 2001, but I get the message that the import "could not
be completed because a necessary file "Microsoft Entourage 2001" could
not be found.
So, I'm still stuck.

Oh my gosh, you are so prompt! I'm speechless. And grateful.
Downloading update(s) right now. Will let you know how it goes.
Thanks so so much.

Ah. You need to have a copy of Entourage 2001 available for the import
to work. Do you still have the 2001 install CD? Load that; it should do
the trick.

Okay, thanks guys for the advice so far, but it's still not working. I
finally got my act together, and figured out the actual version I'm
using: Entourage v.X. The current install is from the exact same CD I
used to install Entourage onto my previous harddisk. Therefore, the old
identity (from the old harddisk) I'm trying to get my newly-installed
Entourage to recognize is from the exact same version. I went ahead and
installed the Entourage v.X update I found on Mactopia, but I still get
the same result: "The identity cannot be opened with this version of
Entourage."
I don't know what else to do now.
Any other ideas?
Sara
P.S. Sigh...if only I'd known about MBOXes....

Interesting note to add: under the Entourage on my previous harddisk,
the identities folder (inside Microsoft User Data) was simply titled
"Identities". Under the current Entourage, it is of course titled
"Office X Identities".

The application that used the simple "Identities" folder in the MUD folder
was not a previous version of Entourage (except in the sense of being a
precursor). It was Outlook Express 5. You cannot open an OE database by
putting it into an "Office X Identities" folder, but you can import it using
File/Import.

PLEASE always state which version of Microsoft Office you are using -
**2004**, X or 2001. It's often impossible to answer your questions
otherwise.

That was it! I successfully imported the old database as an Outlook
Express 5 identity. Thanks for the advice, I'm glad I highlighted the
different folder title. It's pretty weird that the database remained an
OE one, since I'd imported it into Entourage v.X when I switched to it
from OE two years ago.

At any rate, I'm so relieved, and stunned that the problem got solved
in 24 hours. Thanks everyone for your input. Really appreciate it.

P.S. I thought I did clarify the software version in this thread, once
I confirmed which one it was that I was using? But, okay, noted.
